Vincent Van Gogh
Vase with Irises Against a Yellow Background
Saint-Rémy: May, 1890
He was a Dutch impressionist painter in France from 1853-1890, making about 2,100 artworks in his lifetime. He never received any formal training, starting painting at 27. This was one of the few still lives Van Gogh painted while staying at a asylum in Saint-Rémy. The purpose of this painting, being a study of contrast between the purple (now blue) flowers and the yellow background.

Interest & Construction
I have been interested in Vincent Van Gogh's artwork for a long time and I also am a big of irises. In a previous year I constructed another iris painting by Vincent Van Gogh, I decided to continue with that theme this year. I threw this form two times before I decided that this was the shape that I wanted. Since I decided it might be hard to have a pot with clay flowers in it that was functional, I then decided to put the iris design on the outside.
Plan:
-Throw
-Trim
-Add small handles
-Add relief flowers and leaves
-Crave more flowers and leaves
-Add background texture to the pot
-Fire
-Add clear glaze (not done yet)
Reflection:
I wish that had added the clear glaze, for a more finished look. Also in the future I would add more flowers on the outer edge. I am happy with the size of the pot (though smaller than the painting) and I like the terra cotta color. I also liked that this piece h as the same function as the painting, I am looking forward to using it with some of new flowers!
